چکیده
Abstract We present a stochastic dynamic simulation model for exploration and extraction of seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mineral deposits on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The is developed based selected industry knowledge, expectations, perceptions elicited through participatory systems mapping session with 82 participants 20 in-depth interviews experts from industry, academia, public policy sector. Using model, we simulate expected ranges resource- economic potential. results indicate an commercial resource base 1.8 to 3 million tons copper, zinc, cobalt, in which copper makes out most significant part. Relating base, highlight discrepancy between academic industrial expectations are more conservative than expectations. corresponding net values lie range loss 970 USD up gain 2.53 billion USD, projected yield negative value, while positive value. Closer investigation reveals that one main challenges regarding SMS initial costs associated coring operations. These be high today’s technology. Moreover, they occur relatively early time compared revenue-generating activity, has impact value due discounting. Thus, key focus should find ways reduce operations and/or it takes generation revenue.

Key Factors Influencing Rates of Heterotrophic Sulfate Reduction in Active Seafloor Hydrothermal Massive Sulfide Deposits
Hydrothermal vents are thermally and geochemically dynamic habitats, and the organisms therein are subject to steep gradients in temperature and chemistry. To date, the influence of these environmental dynamics on microbial sulfate reduction has not been well constrained. Here, via multivariate experiments, we evaluate the effects of key environmental variables (temperature, pH, H2S, [Formula: ...
متن کاملAncient hydrothermal seafloor deposits in Eridania basin on Mars
The Eridania region in the southern highlands of Mars once contained a vast inland sea with a volume of water greater than that of all other Martian lakes combined. Here we show that the most ancient materials within Eridania are thick (>400 m), massive (not bedded), mottled deposits containing saponite, talc-saponite, Fe-rich mica (for example, glauconite-nontronite), Fe- and Mg-serpentine, Mg...
متن کاملIron Transformation Pathways and Redox Micro-Environments in Seafloor Sulfide-Mineral Deposits: Spatially Resolved Fe XAS and δ57/54Fe Observations
Hydrothermal sulfide chimneys located along the global system of oceanic spreading centers are habitats for microbial life during active venting. Hydrothermally extinct, or inactive, sulfide deposits also host microbial communities at globally distributed sites. The main goal of this study is to describe Fe transformation pathways, through precipitation and oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions...
